Cast: Harold Peary
as Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve
The distinctive voice of Harold Peary appeared on the show from the earliest days, playing various store clerks, waiters or doctors. So popular were his appearances that the permanent character of Gildersleeve was created for him. Gildersleeve was meant to be a blowhard matched only by Fibber himself. The pair could delight in plotting practical jokes on the citizens of Wistful Vista, then delight in plotting against each other.
The character became so popular that in 1941 The Great Gildersleeve premiered on Sunday afternoon air. It has been acknowledged as the first Spin-off series in mass media.
